Cawthorne PE And School Sports Premium

ABOUT THE PE AND SCHOOL SPORT PREMIUM

'All young people should have the opportunity to live healthy and active lives. A positive experience of sport and physical activity at a young age can build a lifetime habit of participation and is central to meeting the government’s ambitions for a world-class education system.

Physical activity has numerous benefits for children and young people’s physical health, as well as their mental wellbeing (increasing self-esteem and emotional wellbeing and lowering anxiety and depression), and children who are physically active are happier, more resilient and more trusting of their peers. Ensuring that pupils have access to sufficient daily activity can also have wider benefits for pupils and schools, improving behaviour as well as enhancing academic achievement.

The PE and sport premium provides primary schools with £320m of government funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of the PE, physical activity and sport offered through their core budgets. It is allocated directly to schools so they have the flexibility to use it in the way that works best for their pupils.' DfE

Our Cawthorne PE And School Sport Rationale

OUTSTANDING P.E FOR ALL

Cawthorne CE (VC) Primary School recognises that one of the key contributing tools for our children to succeed in life is accessing high quality P.E and competitive sport. We believe that through sport, our children begin to develop the important life skills of: discipline, respect, resilience, communication, team work, and ambition; qualities that they are then able to use in their learning within the classroom and beyond. The discipline and respect demanded of the children in sport impacts positively upon behaviour within the classroom, our school and the community.

In order to achieve our aims, Cawthorne CE (VC) Primary School provides a tiered approach to P.E and school sport:

In order to deliver this structured approach, we utilise our enthusiastic and skilled team consisting of teachers, teaching assistants and specialist coaches to ensure that P.E, school sport and physical activity is enjoyed by all. This provision builds strong relationships of trust and respect between pupils and staff, and impacts positively upon the engagement and trust between them in the classroom.

During an academic year, we endeavour for every child at Cawthorne to take part in active playtimes, a sporting enrichment event, engage in an after school club and participate in a competitive event (intra or inter):

  • In EYFS, children participate in high quality P.E sessions and access the outdoor environment to develop core skills. These skills are then applied into enrichment opportunities; extra-curricular clubs and competitive intra-school competitions
  • This continues into KS1 along with opportunities for pupils to participate in inter-school events and local competitions
  • In KS2, where there are more opportunities for pupils to participate in events, go on an outdoor adventurous residential visit and compete in competitions that lead into local, regional and national finals

At Cawthorne, we foster positive relationships with external providers so that children have a pathway to explore their interests, try new things and further develop their abilities. Staff sign post children and families to clubs and competitions, local clubs in the community and specialist elite clubs within the region. Provision in school is also enriched through athlete and specialist coach visits and positive role models being invited into school to share their experiences and stories of dedication and determination to succeed in their sport.

Cawthorne CE (VC) Primary School firmly believes in the development of a child’s character through high quality P.E and competitive school sport. We believe wholeheartedly that a child who learns to be resilient, disciplined, respectful and determined in the sports field will apply the same skills within the classroom, in the community and in later life.

This allows each unique child to develop into the best possible version of themselves. By acquiring the key knowledge and skills to foster academic excellence, coupled with the essential wisdom and character development to promote individual excellence; our children become happy, healthy, confident, responsible individuals who flourish in all aspects of their lives.
